The 2012 SkyGames® were officially presented by ISF President Marino Giacometti on Wednesday, June 23, in Ribagorça Románica in the Spanish Pyrenees where the event will take place. The authorities presiding included the Aragòn Regional President, the Secretary General of Catalonia and Joan Garrigòs, President of the Spanish Mountain Sports Federation, FEDME. The four-day “high altitude Olympics” will be held at the end of June, 2012, encompassing five different skyrunning disciplines attracting an expected 1,500 athletes from thirty countries. Giacometti handed the symbolic flag to Joan Perelada, responsible for the development of the area straddling the autonomous regions of Catalonia and Aragòn which, for the first time, will collaborate on a joint sports venture. In 2008, the area received a €5 million annual injection through EU funding aimed at curtailing depopulation and inviting new residents and visitors. The area, rich in cultural history, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The presentation was set in a charming outdoor setting involving not only the regional and national authorities, but people from the surrounding towns and villages who will no doubt be instrumental in hosting the event. More news on the 2012 SkyGames® will be posted in a specific section on this website later in the year, providing details on travel and accommodation subsidies and entry criteria for international athletes and teams.
