|Inov-8 athlete, Robbie Britton takes to the Sky|
Skyrunner® World Series partner, inov-8, kicks off an extremely exciting year with the Transvulcania Ultramarathon and VK with inov-8 team member, Robbie Britton taking his first steps in a Skyrunning event.
Britton has gained a reputation in the last couple of years as a fast man on road and trail. Representing GB at the 24-hour distance, Britton is no stranger to running long. However, the technical trails and altitude of a Skyrunning event will provide a new stimulus and test to the London based athlete.
Dedicated to the task at hand, Britton based himself on the island of La Palma for one month to prepare meticulously for the challenge ahead. ‘I love to race and I am extremely excited about how I will compare to the best mountain runners in the world,’ he exclaimed, ‘I have been up and down the trails of La Palma honing my skills and gaining an understanding of how to adapt my running for such a tough and challenging race.’
Britton had a brief departure from his temporary La Palma base to undertake a marathon trail race at the Iznik Ultra series of races in Turkey. A race Britton won and set a new course record; ‘the profile of the race was actually similar to Transvulcania with plenty of up and down. It seemed a great opportunity to test myself without over exerting myself. Hills and climbing are not something I would ever consider myself to be good at, however, at Iznik I was running on climbs I would usually walk. A sure sign that my training time on La Palma is working.’
inov-8 founder, Wayne Edy said, ‘2013 was a real milestone for us; not only was it our 10th year but we made a huge impact on the Skyrunner® World Series. Our team of athletes pushed their bodies to the limit over some of the toughest, most grueling mountain races in the world and delivered excellent results.’
Anna Lupton (UK) and Alex Nichols (USA) have taken over the global reigns recently for inov-8 and in 2013 they had incredible success in the Skyrunner® World Series. Lupton placed 5th and Nichols 3rd. The addition of Britton to the inov-8 team will expand inov-8’s racing potential and Transvulcania La Palma is just the beginning… Britton knows only too well the enormity of the task that awaits him on the GR131 as he climbs from the Fuencaliente lighthouse around the rim of Roques de los Muchachos before a breakneck descent down the long and technical descent to Tazacorte and the finish in Los Llanos de Adrienne, ‘It’s a learning curve and I see this race as a long-term project. I need to get my first Skyrunning race under my belt and then I can adjust and move forward. One thing is for sure, it’s going to be an incredible experience and feel honored to be on the same start line with such a high quality field.’
